On This Day - 22nd May

At one time The Ringing World had a feature called On This Day where notable events from the past were listed.

Unfortunately, the events weren't related to ringing. This web page is a ringing version of On This Day.

1332The tower of the Cathedral of St Canice, Kilkenny, Ireland collapsed, destroying the bells.nv
1716Under this date in the registers of St Giles, Cripplegate is the entry: “Matthew Bagley, founder, killed.” A damp mould caused an explosion when he was casting cannon on May 12, 1716. His son also died. See May 26, 1716.RW1946/9
17656,000 Oxford Treble Bob Royal was rung at Leeds, Kent in 4 hours and 3 minutes. This was the longest peal in the method to this date. See April 7, 1741 and January 17, 1767.nv
1799The Junior Cumberland Youths rang John Noonan's composition of Stedman Triples at St Giles-in-the-Fields. Noonan sat out and conducted it himself from the manuscript. The composition was immensely complicated; the peal board states it contains 733 bobs and 22 doubles and although these figures are incorrect it is a formidable task for a conductor. Shipway printed it incorrectly in his book, and it was not till 1976 that William T Perrins confirmed it was a true composition. One hundred and eighty-one years after it was first rung a band of College Youths rang it non-conducted! See February 28, 1980.PB
1820The new ring of ten that Thomas Mears cast for Chesterfield was opened on this Monday morning. Three peals were rung: 5147 Grandsire Caters by the Oldham Society; 5003 Grandsire Caters by the Sheffield Society and 5200 New Treble Bob Royal by a mixed band from Leeds, Wakefield and Sheffield Independents. The peal ringing continued the next day! See May 23, 1820.nv
1865E Alexander Young born. See July 23, 1956.RW1956/521
1893Two attempts for long peals were publicised for this day. The first was for the 17,045 Grandsire Caters at Wolverhampton, shortened to an eight thousand the previous month. (See April 3, 1893) This attempt was postponed due to two of the band being unwell. An announced attempt for 13,440 Double Norwich Court Bob Major at Brentwood, Essex for the Society of Cumberland Youths was never reported upon in The Bell News.nv
1899Two long peals were rung on this day. The first was an attempt for 17,117 Grandsire Caters at Wolverhampton, composed and conducted by James E Groves. He brought the peal round after 11,563 changes due "to the indisposition of one of the ringers." The second peal was at Kidlington, Oxon, where James W Washbrook called his own composition of 17,024 Double Norwich Court Bob Major in 11 hours and 12 minutes. This peal caused a great deal of controversy in The Bell News, as William Pye, who had called the previous record length only seven weeks earlier, came and listened to it. Amongst other libellous remarks he declared it was badly struck throughout and all the claimed changes had not been rung. Other witnesses spoke to the contrary. The quarrel raged for many weeks in the correspondence columns!BN1888/9
1950The Sunday Service band at Leicester Cathedral rang the first peal of Bristol Surprise Maximus, conducted by H J Poole. Although a difficult method, this was destined to become one of the most popular of the Surprise Maximus methods.RW1950/338
1983The first peal of Cambridge Surprise Major by a band of churchwardens was rung at St Mary's Reading, conducted by Geoffrey K Dodd. The band had gathered from churches as much as 400 miles apart!nv
2004The longest peal of Uxbridge Surprise Major was rung on this day at Port Sunlight, Cheshire. The 10,080 changes were composed by Richard Allton and conducted by Peter D Hughes and rung in 5 hours and 49 minutes.RW2004/739
2009The inaugural meeting of the Central European Association of Change Ringers took place at Dordrecht in the Netherlands. About fifteen people from the Netherlands and Belgium were joined by a contingent from Germany and Switzerland to elect the officers and set the association on a formal footing.RW2009/675
